Narrative Environments: Transforming the Architectural Canvas

Projection mapping - Architectural interactivity - Augmented Reality, these have become buzz words for narrative environments.

The built environment is increasingly overlaid with a digital layer, an onionskin of sensors collecting information and representing physical space in a digital realm. As technology progresses and becomes more accessible and scalable, trends are in evidence which merge the digital and architectural spaces. Light, video and soundscapes are harnessed to redefine the relationship between occupant and space.

In this new world what distinguishes between designing architectural lighting and designing narrative light? What common language can be established for collaboration, when architectural space is augmented by media? How do we work together to tell the story of a space?

The panel, including an art director, video designer and lighting designer will discuss the various techniques used to overlay content within a space. Examples of projection mapping will be shown, as well as interactive environments that gather data on occupants and transform the space accordingly.

We will shift the discussion from examples of narrative environments to a higher level conversation on what constitutes best practice when collaborating between lighting designer and content designer. We'll discuss overlaps in scope, and how to create balance between the roles.
